If this liquid gas, when thor- oughly cooled by being packed in ice and salt, is allowed to escape freely through a fine jet, it rushes out with a hissing sound, and the sudden expansion of the escaping gas lowers its temper- ature so much that part of it falls to the ground frozen into fine snow. If a small woolen bag or pouch be put over the jet, this solid carbonic acid may be caught in considerable quantities.
