Paul could not but see that there was something fatally wrong in this social relation ; that, whatever leni- tives and palliatives might be applied to it, it could only, being itself an evil, bring forth evil fruit. Yet how apply the only sovereign and complete remedy ?
Slavery was an established institution of the time ; it was interwoven with all the relations and interests — domestic, civic, political — of society. To pluck it suddenly out would be to imperil the whole fabric — probably, to

Paul was of a statesmanlike sagacity as well as of an Apostolic fervour : and therefore he hated the wasteful " falsehood of extremes." In his public Epistles he endeavoured to mitigate the evil which as yet — and because it entangled in its embraces much that was good — it would not be safe to destroy.
