Some crimes, such as adultery, are punished with much severity in a poor man; but a Chief can do as he likes in these matters. No law can punish him. The extremes of their character are very striking. You would not think that the fine, generous man you are conversing with would go home and enjoy a piece of human flesh, or imbrue his hands with pleasure in the blood of defenceless women and children; and yet such is the fact.
