To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:
Vater made ' an examination of the Bacchae of Euripides, with the view of showing that it did not differ from the Rhesus in that regard, but could find in a play of 1370 lines (as against 996 in the Rhesus) only eight aira^ dpij/ieva, some of which were at least doubtful. The first really scientific examination of the question has been made recently* by Eysert, whose results are most interesting, and in view of the weight which has always been laid on the number of rare words in the Rhesus, alm...ost startling. As the result of an extensive lexico- graphical examination of all the tragedies of Euripides, he finds that while the Rhesus, according to his table, has 28" aTra^ dprifieva, it contains only one-eighteenth of the 482 aira^ dp7ip.eva to be found in all the plays of Euripides.
