Moreover, midway between the bend and on...e end of the piece there was observed before bending a crack \ inch deep on the edge, which was evidently due to the outer oxidised envelope not having been wholly removed.
Despite the fact that the bending was carried out in such a way that the pressure was applied on the extreme points, this crack did not develop. It will be readily accepted that the steel was actually burnt, and from the facts stated it will be as readily agreed that such burnt steel can be, and has been, restored, and in some instances actually improved.
