Any medium, therefore, to be capable of transmitting the waves that produce light must not only possess an exceed- ingly great elasticity, but at the same time must have an exceedingly great tenuity. Now a medium possessing these properties is known to exist in what is called the luminif- erous ether, because of its ability to transmit waves of light. The great objection to the wave theory of light, therefore, has been removed.
It is now believed by practically aU scientists that this ether is ...a highly elastic medium so extremely tenuous that it can pass freely through such substances as glass, water, or even the densest metals. It is imponderable or possesses NATURE OF LIGHT 165 absolutely no weight. You must not suppose, however, that it in any respect resembles the atmosphere of the earth, or any such traces of that atmosphere which exist in any very high vacuum.
It is called the luminiferous ether because light is trans- mitted through it by means of waves, or to-and-fro mo- tions that take place at right angles to the direction in which the ray of light is advancing.
