Dr. Andrews has examined carbonic acid under varied conditions of temperature and pressure, in order to ascertain the relations of the liquid and gaseous states, and has arrived at the conclusion that the gaseous and liquid states are only widely separated forms of the same condition of matter, and may be made to pass one into the other with- out any interruption or breach of continuity. 1 Carbonic acid is... a substance which at ordinary tempera- tures and pressures is known as a gas. The measurements of Regnault and others show that as the pressure increases the volume diminishes faster than that of a gas which obeys the law of Boyle, and that as the temperature rises the ex- pansion is greater than that assigned by the law of Charles.
The isothermal lines of the diagram of carbonic acid at ordinary temperatures and pressures are therefore somewhat flatter and also somewhat wider apart than those of the more perfect gases.
