Persons engaged in mining industries. — The statistics of the num- ber of proprietors and officials, clerks, and wage earners, are based on the returns for December 15, or the nearest representative day.
The reported number of wage earners includes overseers and fore- men performing work similar to that of the men over whom they have charge; those whose duties are wholly supervisory are classed as superintendents and managers.
