Patient had left kidney removed three years previously for (?) abscess. On admission great oedema present; urine scanty, with much albumen. Morphine and the usual measures success- fully adopted. The foetal heart not being heard after careful ituscultation, and as the fits had ceased, it was decided to empty the uterus by induction of labour.

This time the vagina was tightlv plugged with gauze around the protruding ends of the bougies. About six hours later some irregular pains set in, and on the evening of the 18th — that is forty-eight hours after the commencement of induction — on removing the plug and bougies the os uteri was found to be about the size of a sixpence, and the cervix to be almost fully taken up.
