Its tone will be observed to jar inharmoniously with that pervading Mr. Lockhart's description of the same scenes: — " It is somewhat ludicrous to obse...rve the pains with which the Edinburgh Government scribes endeavour to press Sir Walter Scott into the first rank of the personages who occupied the proscenium during the arrangements for his Majesty's reception in Scotland. ' From first to last, ' they say, ' Sir Walter received from the King the most condescending marks of attention. ' It is a pity that the author of ' Waverley' should deem it important to figure in every part of a corporation pageant, and should suffer his friends, if such they are, to force npon liim a feeling of vulgar vanity, which may be their's for excellent reasons, but which never can, or, at least, never ought to be his.
