It would be impossible for me, without having recourse to disagreeable prolixities and repetitions, to explain the trouble which I took to disengage myself from those pursuits which dis- turbed my peace of mind, in order that I might open my heart to the influences of the Invisible; but I perceived witn pain that I could not attain my object by this means, for the garment of folly had been to me more than a mask — its effects had pierced me through and through.
