The servitude to which slaves are subjected is so grievous to be borne, and such a gross outrage upon humanity, that the oppressors dare not allow them to be taught to read, in conse- quence of which, we behold one sixth of the population of this professing Christian country, in such a degraded condition, that they are not permitted to read the Bible.
