Some one cried out that they had gunpowder and intended to blow up the altar and all the people who were on it. They were dragged out at once and, not being able to satisfactorily explain their presence, their heads were cut off and paraded about on pikes amid great excitement. When the news of this outrage reached the Hotel-de-Ville the Municipality ordered the proclamation of martial law, and, about half-past seven in the evening, Lafayette and Bailly, Mayor of Paris, with some companies of the National Guard appeared on the Champ-de-Mars to put down the disturbance.
