The outer strands are longer and to a limited extent may be considered as spiral springs. It will be noted that the cable is more elastic than the solid strand which is a desirable characteristic in long spans, as will be shown later.

The most serious objection to the use of iron or steel wire is that the galvanizing only protects the wire for a few years and it is, therefore, less permanent than copper.
Elasticity.
The elasticity of the conductor is of considerable value in re- ducing the sag when the stress is removed. The elongation of the wire under stress is less after it has once been stretched. The elas- ticity of cable is greater than that of solid wire, but both wire and BLACKWELL: LONG SPANS. 129 cable take a set under any stress to which they may be subjected.
